The 2007 Academy Awards: Live Commentary
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Award Shows, Specials, ABC, Editorial, Features,
Welcome to our live coverage of the 79th Annual Academy Awards! During our live-blog of the 2006 Oscars, I made what may now be considered an eerie prediction about Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe:
“For some reason, I keep getting this nagging feeling that their relationship will dissolve sometime soon, but that discussion is for another post.”
I’d like to say that I’m psychic (if so, that Oscars pool at work is all mine)...but I’m going to have to chalk it up to nagging intuition. What is that little voice inside me saying this year? While some races may have been locked up months ago (I’m talking to you, Helen Mirren), there will be a shocker this year. I can’t pinpoint the category, but I think it will be come riding in on a big yellow bus…
To find out who will be going hog-wild tonight during the Year of the Pig, stay tuned here for the live results!

Justin Timberlake Will Host Kids’ Choice Awards
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Award Shows, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
Justin Timberlake is a kids’ favorite, so why not let the singer/actor host Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards? This is the 20th installment of the awards program, which lets kids pick their faves among movies, TV, music, sports, books, and video games. Wow, 20 years doesn’t even seem right. Has Nickelodeon even been around that long? At any rate, Timberlake, who has won the Kids’ Choice award for Best Burp twice, will get to show his worth as host. Will there be burping? You can probably bet on it. Timberlake is also nominated for best male singer. “While honoring kids’ opinions, it taps into the kid in all of us,” said Timberlake about the event. The Kids’ Choice Awards airs on March 31st—kids can vote online for their favorites beginning on March 5th.

American Idol’s Jennifer Hudson Nominated for Oscar
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Award Shows, Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol,
How great is the news that former American Idol finalist Jennifer Hudson is nominated for an Oscar? What a sweet comeback she made after being ousted on Idol. It has been an amazing rise straight to the top for this talented woman. I thought she was robbed on Idol, but seems she made out pretty well after all. I have yet to see Dreamgirls, but have read that her performance is nothing less than spectacular. Her Golden Globe win seems to confirm her talent, and let’s hope that this big leap out of the starting gate into films will mean even more impressive work from her for years to come.

The 2007 Golden Globe Awards

Ladies and Gents – I can’t tell you how excited I am about the 64th Annual Golden Globe Awards tonight!! It’s been a whole five months since I’ve done minute-by-minute coverage of an awards show and I’ve been dying to unload. (And yes—I am ignoring the fact that the People’s Choice Awards even exist).
The Academy Awards may get the largest viewing audience, but the Golden Globes telecast is the only one I really love to watch. A cross between the insignificant People’s Choice and the stuffy Oscars, this show mixes credibility with spontaneous fun. Yes—the Miss Golden Globe tradition is beyond lame. And yes—separating Dramas from Musicals/Comedies is something I will never understand. But knowing that I may see a star slam down a drink after bitterly losing is exciting defined.
As for who I think should win? Well, Jennifer Hudson is an absolute given. (Though Rinko Kikuchi from Babel would be a nice surprise). And it would be great to see Forest Whitaker beat out both Leo nominations. But no matter what happens, I’m ready for the ride. So bring it on!

Mark Burnett Takes on MTV Movie Awards
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Award Shows, Music, Prime Time, Cable, Apprentice, The - Donald, Rock Star, Survivor,
Because there’s nothing that Mark Burnett can’t handle—he will now be taking control of the MTV Movie Awards as executive producer. Now, we can’t expect any Burnett production to be without twists. But what can he do to an awards show? Make the nominees compete in elaborate challenges? Send the award losers to exile island? Have Donald Trump fire someone? Well, he can’t do too much to the awards, but he is changing things up a bit by televising the MTV Movie Awards live for the first time. Burnett won’t be altering much of anything, and the kooky categories and movie parodies that fans enjoy will stay put. He does plan to include some “bombshell moments” to make the broadcast more interesting. MTV president Christina Norman says in a statement, “Mark has great ideas and vision for the Movie Awards, and I know he’s going to bring some fresh energy to the show.” The MTV Movie Awards will air on June 3rd.

Move over, Barbara Walters. There’s a new Oscar special on the horizon. That’s right, Oprah Winfrey will be presenting a pre-Oscar ceremony special, in the spirit of Walters’ now well-known celeb chat. While Walters has yet to announce her guests, Winfrey has revealed that The Oprah Winfrey Oscar Special will have celebrities interviewing one another. This fresh take will feature Julia Roberts interviewing George Clooney, Nicole Kidman asking questions of Russell Crowe, and Jamie Foxx chatting with Sidney Poitier. The Oprah Winfrey Oscar Special will air three days prior to the Oscar ceremony on Thursday, February 22nd, on ABC, following Grey’s Anatomy. Walters special, as she has historically done, will air on Oscar night, February 25th. No word yet on whether or not Winfrey will appear on the special, although she is the executive producer of the show.

VH1 Big In ‘06 Awards—Big Waste?
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Award Shows, Music, Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
I tried to watch the VH1 Big in ‘06 Awards, I really did. But I just couldn’t help thinking this was a colossal waste of time. I love awards shows as much as the next gal, but this one is completely unnecessary. But maybe that’s the point. The event kicked off with host D.L. Hughley telling a bunch of unfunny jokes at rapid fire pace, followed by the first presenters of the night—the cheerleader from Heroes and Tommy Lee. Ugh. They presented the award for Big Music Artist to Justin Timberlake, and even he seemed unexcited to be there. Next up? Backstage interviews to come courtesy of VH1’s darling, Flavor Flav. Double Ugh. That’s where they lost me. Appearances included Eva Longoria, Lance Bass, Kiefer Sutherland, Stephen Colbert, Joey Lawrence, Katharine McPhee, Masi Oka, lonelygirl15 (Jessica Rose,) and more, with a special performance by Dennis DeYoung. That’s a big “huh?” from me, but maybe Dennis DeYoung is making a comeback or something? Anyway, winners included David Hasselhoff (Big Comeback), Britney Spears (Big Mama), Stephen Colbert (Big Breakthrough), Janelle Pierzina (Big Reality Star, Big Brother All-Stars), Katharine McPhee (Big IT Girl), Kiefer Sutherland (Big TV Star).

Faith Hill’s CMA “Joke” Sparks Controversy
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Award Shows, Music, Prime Time, Gossip, Internet, News,
During last night’s Country Music Association Awards (CMAs), Faith Hill reacted to Carrie Underwood’s win for female vocalist of the year by what appeared to be her screaming “WHAT?” Well, it’s all over the Internet today and in the media—was Hill being a poor sport, a la Kanye West? Hill says no—that she was merely joking with her reaction. Says Hill of the incident, “The idea that I would act disrespectful towards a fellow musician is unimaginable to me. For this to become a focus of attention given the talent gathered is utterly ridiculous. Carrie is a talented and deserving Female Vocalist of The Year.” The camera shot of Hill when the winner was announced did not pick up the audio, but it seemed clear that she was saying the word “WHAT?” The video (of course, available on YouTube.com) also appears to show Hill storm off camera. I don’t know much about country music or the artists, but what I’ve seen of Faith Hill, it does seem out of character for her to be a poor sport. Apparently, Underwood had no hard feelings about it either—her publicist said the two singers spoke afterward and all was fine.

Ellen DeGeneres to Host Oscars
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Award Shows, Prime Time, Talk Shows, ABC,
Ellen DeGeneres has been tapped to host the 79th Annual Academy Awards on February 25th. Laura Ziksin, producer for this year’s show called DeGeneres to offer her the hosting job. DeGeneres was thrilled by the offer, saying, “There’s two things I’ve always wanted to do in my life: One is to host the Oscars. The second is to get a call from Laura Ziskin. You can imagine that day’s diary entry.”
DeGeneres is no stranger to hosting award shows, having successfully co-hosted the Primetime Emmy Awards in 1994, then again in 2001 and 2005. She has proven to be an entertaining emcee to such events, and her quick wit and easy-going demeanor have wide appeal. “I’ve always wanted to host the show, ever since I hosted the Emmys,” DeGeneres said. “Obviously, it’s a huge honor, although it’s not always a great situation. If you do well, they don’t talk about it, and if you don’t do well, you’re torn apart. But I like the challenge, and I’d like to put my stamp on it. In fact, I’m thinking of stretching it out even longer to two nights like Rock Star: Supernova.”
